Taking Aim for CPSA

Well done to the Cundall Manor School pupils who recently received accreditation for their Clay Pigeon Shooting Association Shotgun Skills. The pupils had to complete a thorough theory and practical examination in order to achieve their badges. An initial 2 ½ hr lecture on all aspects of gun safety, gun fitting, correct stance and target acquisition using both the CPSA Method, swing through and applied lead methods started the day on a firm footing. Pupils then visited the Park Lodge Shooting School near Selby to receive one-to-one tuition on DTL (Down the Line), Skeet and Sporting shoots. Mr Reece, a former CCRS adult national champion in both Skeet and DTL, ably led the day. Pupils left with two certificates (CPSA Discover/Experience Clay Shooting and CPSA Shotgun Skills) and will now turn their attention to the North of England Schools Championships to be held on the 19th of this month
Cundall perform well at National Championships

Cundall Manor School were strongly represented at this year’s National Schools Equestrian Association Championships. The team were competing in more classes than ever before across 2 days at Addington Manor, Buckinghamshire. In the outdoor arena, classes included the Team Show Jumping with a technical timed section. In the indoor arena, the Cundall team competed in the Team Jumping with Style (JWS), a combination of show jumping and challenging cross country fences. The JWS had added entertainment as the riders had a commentator in the box to entertain the crowd. There were lots of fast times and clear rounds and our highest placing was in the JWS 75cms Competition, where a team including Kate Sanderson, Jemima Tomlinson, Oliver Kitching and Amelia Bullock came a very respectable 12th out of 34 teams. A special mention must go to Kate Sanderson on Roxy, who narrowly missed out on the jump off for the individual Show jumping, coming 10th overall. However, this did mean that she qualified to represent England in the Team Nations Cup in the indoor arena where the fences went up again. She went clear and got the fastest time, way to go Kate! Well done to all team members, Zaila Barker, George Barker, Jemima Kitching, Venetia Thompson and Theo Thompson. And finally, a huge thank you to Lucy Sanderson who has managed the team brilliantly. We can’t thank you enough. Good luck for the rest of the year.
Form 6 Chateau Trip 2017

By Ruby Pettifer I had the most wonderful time at the Chateau. It was the best experience ever. We arrived on Sunday at 3pm and were split into groups named after letters of the alphabet. Our first activity was a tour of the grounds. We saw the mini-farm, the games room and the letters – where we met in our groups before every activity. Then we went back to our dorms for a long, well-needed sleep. The next morning it was croissants for breakfast! We ate them all! Our first activity was bread making. Once the dough was made we played competitions. Who could make the longest baguette, the roundest pizza and he prettiest snails. After that we moulded our dough into the shape we wanted it to cook in to – I did a hedgehog – and put then into the oven. For our afternoon activity we tried canoeing. We changed into wetsuits, put on our helmets and jumped into a canoe where we swam in “crocodile infested” waters. Canoeing was my favourite activity. On Tuesday we drove to the market of Mont Saint-Michel. The market was huge. I bought a beret, a mini African drum and a personalised glass. After lunch we took a shuttle bus to Mont Saint-Michel where we trekked up most of the 80m to the top of the island. Wednesday was amazing. We first did archery and tried to pop the balloons stuck to the bullseye. Next was the French lesson where we translated our daily routines – c’était difficile. That afternoon we had the famous mud course to tackle. Wearing the tattiest clothes we have ever worn, we swam in muddy water, rolled in sticky mud, then showered with cold muddy water. At the end, all of our clothes were to be found in the bin. The next day we went to the D-Day beaches and learnt more about what happened on the beaches of Normandy at the nearby museum. We walked to the cinema and then visited the cemetery where we paid our respects to the soldiers. After that, we went to see the Bayeux tapestry. It was very impressive… and long! On Thursday afternoon we had the talent show. Jemima, Connie, Martha, Amelia and Pippa were the Spice Girls; Sam, Will and Dylan played the African drums; Ellie, Colette and Poppy sang together; Scarlett sang a solo; Tom played the cup song and I played the drums I bought. I loved my trip to the Chateau. It was the best trip I’ve ever been on. Thank you to all the teachers who helped make it such a great experience for all our year. Songwriting Workshop Inspires Upper School

A workshop from a talented up-and-coming songwriter recently inspired dozens of our Upper School pupils. Rich Cottell, came to Cundall earlier this term to conduct a series of songwriting workshops with some of the school’s older pupils. The 24 year-old from Devon, who recently released his debut album, ‘More than just a Geek,’ has a cult following online and has a string of writing credits to his name for some of Britain’s biggest selling pop artists. Describing his sound as ‘feel good, live life pop,’ Rich visited the school and encouraged pupils to get some of their thoughts down on paper. Rich said: “My goal was to show young people how, when they put their mind to it, anyone, musician or not, can write and be involved with the writing of a song.” “The day was a huge success, with all students creating minimum of a verse and chorus in small groups and performing them.” Adding: “My hope is that it will inspire some of the students to be even more creative and explore songwriting as a career.”
Lunchtime Concert

Another wonderful set of performances wowed proud parents and fellow pupils following the first of this year’s Lunchtime Concert series which returned to Cundall Church earlier today. We heard from pianists, singers, flautists, guitarists and many more of our young musicians. Well done to all our performers for another enchanting concert and keep up the great work.
ABRSM Music Success

It is twice as nice for 9 year old twins William and Kaitlin, who are celebrating a wonderful set of results in their recent Music Exams. The twins recorded a significant musical achievement by both claiming distinctions in their respective exams. William, who sat his Grade 3 in Piano and Kaitlin, who was examined on her Grade 2 Singing, both achieved the accolade earlier this year. The twins join other pupils who are also celebrating their resounding successes following fantastic feedback on their Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) examinations. The musicians secured a 100% pass rate across a variety of specialisms and grades. The ABRSM results mark the culmination of many months’ work for the school’s pupils. Director of Music at Cundall Manor School, Sarah Reece, said: “The hard work and practice put in by our musicians is wonderful. To see such success across our school is a great achievement.” She added: “A special well done deserves to go to William and Kaitlin for their superb results and to both gain a distinction is a wonderful success.” Pupils from the school will be next performing at the nearby Ampleforth College as part of a wider choral day at the Abbey.
