Race for Life Returns to Cundall

Nearly two hundred Cundall pupils completed a charitable dash for cash in aid of Cancer Research. The school held the Race for Life on Wednesday 10 January, with pupils as young as FOUR and as old as 13 taking part in the race. The pupils braved the cold and damp conditions to take on cancer and walk, jog or run in aid of Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work. To help the pupils prepare, teachers have been using specially created resources by the charity which includes everything needed to stage the event as well as top fundraising tips. Louise Bessey, Head of Girls’ Games at Cundall Manor School, said: “This is the second year we have run the Race for Life and it is great to see how the event has developed. “Last year we raised over six thousand pound for the charity and we hope to beat that target this year. The whole school community is supporting the event so it will be a real team effort, all whilst raising money for a wonderful cause.” “Most of us know someone who has been affected by cancer and we all have our special reasons for taking part and wanting to help more people survive.” Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is an inspiring series of events which raises millions of pounds every year to help fund vital research. The Cundall community gathered at Ripon Cathedral to celebrate another wonderful year. The annual Carol Service was incredibly well received by an appreciative audience as Cundall Manor School gathered at Ripon Cathedral to celebrate the start of the Christmas period. Nearly 1000 people gathered in the Cathedral of the Dales to join in song and listen to readings from our pupils, in one of the school’s most cherished traditions. Cundall Crowned National Champions

Girls from Cundall Manor School have been crowned national champions after coming out on top in the U13 ISA National Championship at the Olympic Park in London for a second year in a row. The girls claimed the prestigious trophy at the Lee Valley Hockey Centre which was used in the 2012 Olympics. The school triumphed against tough opposition from across the country before clinching the title in a tense final against Holme Grange School from Workingham, Berkshire. A goal after 7 seconds in the final was enough for the North Yorkshire girls to claim the victory and retain the trophy that was won last year by their school friends. The side, who maintained a clean sheet throughout the tournament, came under sustained pressure from a strong Holme Grange School side in an open and fluent final. Head of Girls Games at Cundall Manor School, Louise Bessey, said: “I am absolutely thrilled by the performance the girls put in throughout the tournament. To keep a clean sheet across all six games is a great achievement and a special mention deserves to go to Colette, our goalkeeper, who put in such a strong display in the final.” She added: “You can see that the team truly enjoy competing against some of the best teams nationally. To claim back-to-back wins at such a level is a great accolade for the school and great credit goes to our pupils for their commitment and enthusiasm towards the game you can see they love playing.” The Cundall side included several county players and are looking to build on their continued success next year. The team beat London based Northwood College 5-0 in the opening game before overcoming a competitive Ballard side 4-0 in the pool stage. They team finished their pool games with a convincing 5-0 win against LVS Ascot to progress to the knock out stages. En route to the final the North Yorkshire youngsters dug deep to beat Sussex side, Finborough 3-0 in the quarter final before meeting Hampshire’s Alton School in the semi-final, overcoming the team 5-0 with a strong team performance. Mrs Bessey added: “The girls worked very well as a team throughout the tournament. It was great to see them play such fluid hockey on the big stage.” The girls picked up their medals in front of a crowd of proud parents and staff who came down from North Yorkshire to support the team. Cundall Conker Competition 2017

As autumn turns to winter, the annual Conker Competition returned to Cundall Manor School. The tournament was as fiercely fought as ever with over 200 pupils taking part across two days. Pupils from Main and Upper School battled it out to see who was the top competitor in their age group. This year Juliette, Harvey, Lucy and Ben came out on top of their respective categories. A huge well done to all our competitors who thoroughly enjoyed the competition and thank you to the sports department who organised another fun, fabulous event for our pupils.

Form 5 visit YSP

A recent trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park offered our young artists inspiration and an insight into the work of the acclaimed artist Ed Kluz. Mrs Pearson tells us more about the trip. Earlier this month the whole of Form 5 had the pleasure of a day out at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. They spent part of the morning having a guided tour of some of the permanent collection of sculptures in the park, learning about the artists and discussing the history and context of the works. The rest of the morning was spent at the “Sheer Folly – Fanciful Buildings of Britain” exhibition in the main building. It is the largest solo exhibition to date by artist, illustrator and printmaker Ed Kluz who celebrates the eccentric, uncanny and overlooked follies, temples and towers that dot the British landscape. The pupils were able to take over the main gallery and spend time sketching and designing their own folly. It was a great opportunity to study the artist’s work up close in advance of his visit to school next month. We are very excited (and lucky) that Ed Kluz himself has agreed to come and do a workshop with the pupils early in December and we eagerly await the chance to see the artist at work and learn his techniques first hand. After lunch we went to the outdoor workshop where the pupils split into small groups to produce their own ‘follies’ using some of the vast stock of materials available. Titles of works included “Leaf it”, “Horrible Homework Treehouse” and the “Magic Maker” to name a few, presentations of the works included performance art in some cases and all were incredibly imaginative. I was delighted that the pupils showed so much enthusiasm, initiative and team work and were a credit to the school.

Venice 2017

Earlier this term, our art pupils had the chance to visit Venice to take in some of the city’s world-renowned artworks, sights and culture. Eldmire pupil, Maddison, recounts the journey and some of her highlights.   Our amazing adventure started at 5.15am at Leeds Bradford Airport, and from there we journeyed to Marco Polo Airport, Venice. The trip on the Vaporetto from the airport to Venice across the waterways was truly incredible. We then walked to find the hotel, only to drop our bags, before heading out to explore. A quick fuel stop at McDonalds and straight onto the first of our exhibitions – Damian Hirst’s Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable. There we found his magnificent mythical creations and were lucky enough to spend the afternoon studying them, whilst being captivated by the views of Venice, seen through the windows of the gallery. To finish the day off, we enjoyed a lovely meal at the hotel’s very own restaurant. However, we didn’t realise how expensive one coke could be! Day two and we were off again, this time to visit La Biennale, an exhibition dedicated to new and upcoming artists from around the world, representing their own country. We visited Great Britain’s gallery represented by the artist Phyllida Barlow. My favourite however was the Australian exhibition, being shown by artist Tracey Moffatt. Later that day we returned to the hotel in order to get ready for a rather posh meal out. Our daily budget was certainly well spent that day. Moving on to our last day on the beautiful island of Venice, we travelled to Peggy Guggenheim’s Collection. Here I fell in love with Salvador Dali’s work. After exploring this house of wonders, we took a short walk and a slight detour (as we got rather lost in the alleyways) to St Mark’s Square, where we found the elegant Doge’s Palace. Just from the look of the exterior you could see how much detail and effort was put into the building of this piece of great architecture. Towards the end of the day, we took our final vaporetto over to one of the islands to sit on a step and sketch the stunning silhouette of Venice. In the background, we listened to the sounds of an English boys’ choir. We also got to enjoy the incredible views from up above in the great tower of the island, however, when the bell rang we all thought the tower would come tumbling down. Our last evening meal on the island had to include a little silly dancing and embarrassing ourselves ever so slightly, and of course, enjoying some of the wonderful pizza. We finally went off to bed in order to get a couple of hours sleep before an early start to our journey home. It is a trip I will never forget. Thank you to everyone who organised it and to all for the memories we made.

Form 4 Visit York for 21 Gun Salute

Form 4 recently visited York to honour HRH the Prince of Wales on his birthday. Form 4’s Jack writes about the trip. On Tuesday 14th November 2017 Form 4 went to the Royal Salute in York Museum gardens. It was to celebrate His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales birthday. We watched the 21 gun salute which is made with 3 guns firing a total of 21 single shots with a 10 second gap between each round. Afterwards, we got to meet the soldiers form the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery. We were also able to take a closer look at the guns, trying out aiming them by moving the barrel up and down, lifting them up to move them and sitting in the firing seat. We all had a really good day.

Pupils Wrap Up Another County Championship

Well done to the U12 hockey team who have been crowned ‘County Champions.’ The team put in a series of strong performances to secure the title with a fantastic 3 wins out of 3 at the county finals today. The title follows hot on the heels of the school U14 team who recently claimed the North East semi final title. They will next tackle the North of England finals. Keep up the good work Team Cundall.

Lest we forget

Pupils, parents, members from our community and the armed forces came together today to remember those who have lost their lives in service of their country. Pupils and members of the local armed forces led the act of remembrance to mark Armistice Day and honoured the fallen with a two minute silence at 11am. Thank you to everyone who attended the service.
