GCSE pupils to get a head start on exam marathon

Year 11 pupils have benefited from a head start to their GCSE preparations following a dedicated day of study skills and revision techniques. Thornton yesterday (Tuesday 11 September) held a ‘Growth Mindset’ event which encouraged Year 11 pupils to challenge the way they prepare for their upcoming exams. Sue O’Leary-Hall, the Founder and Academic Director of regional educational specialists, Thesan Coaching and Training, led the session. Sue, who has 20 years’ experience as an outstanding teacher and senior leader, encouraged pupils to prepare for their exams as if it’s a marathon and not a sprint. Sue said: “The new exam system is placing greater pressure than ever on young people as a result of increasing academic rigour, a grading system where the top grade exceeds the previous A* standard and the abolition of coursework. It is vital for pupils to learn how to manage a complex and demanding workload, as well as looking after their own physical and emotional well-being throughout the GCSE marathon.” Pupils were also taught effective revision techniques and approaches to independent learning alongside how to manage stress and keep calm at pivotal moments. Sue, who has previously held the roles of Director of Teaching and Learning, Head of Sixth Form and Head of English in her teaching career, added: “As ever, I have been enormously impressed by the positivity and commitment to succeed demonstrated by Cundall’s Year 11 pupils. They should be able to put the strategies they have learned today into immediate effect to give them the very best chance of achieving highly next summer.” The school also invited parents to participate in a tailored session on how they can help ensure their children are as well prepared as possible to conquer the exam season challenge. Elsewhere, Thesan and Cundall Manor School have been working in partnership to help raise awareness of the importance of well-being across the school community. Dr Emma Dixon, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with 20 years’ experience of working in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), has been on hand to help promote self-care and emotional well-being and to help pupils reflect on their self-awareness and put in place strategies to cope with stress and to help develop their resilience. From Autumn 2020, Health Education (including a special focus on mental health, well-being and resilience) will be a statutory requirement in all primary and secondary schools in England. Cundall Manor is already leading the field in this area by providing specialist training for all senior school staff at the start of term through Thesan Coaching and Training. The ‘Supporting Pupil’s Emotional Health and Well-Being’ bespoke training session draws on the latest psychological research, as well as being specifically tailored to enable staff to support individual pupils at the school.

Cundall Manor School is guaranteeing pupils, parents and visitors a warm welcome this Autumn following the opening of a new dedicated Reception building. The building is the latest addition to the school grounds and was officially declared open on Tuesday (28 August 2018), following a 6-month project. The new Reception has been designed by architects George F. Sir Thomas Ingilby, Chair of Governors at the school, officially opened the building. Sir Thomas said: “First impressions are vitally important in any business and the new Visitor Reception building sends out a strong message: that Cundall Manor is a thriving, forward-thinking school that offers a warm welcome to all” Joint Head at the School, John Sample, said: “The new building will act as a one-stop shop for our community and visitors to the school. Parents have watched the building grow from the foundations over the past term and I am sure they will appreciate the difference it will make to the running of the school.” A select group of governors, staff and interested parties gathered to witness the opening of the building ahead of the start of term. The school recently celebrated another wonderful set of GCSE results and parents of Year 11 pupils had the chance to take a behind the scenes tour of the building prior to the official opening.

Hannah Barker, aged 13, has been selected to ride for Great Britain under the title sponsor banner of Team LeMieux in the Pony European Championships. The competition takes place between the 7th – 12th August 2018 at Bishop Burton College where Hannah will compete with Ammanvalley Santino, a 14 year-old dark bay gelding owned by Lynn Barker. As one of the top riders in her class, Hannah is looking to build on a strong start to the season having recently represented Great Britain and secured a podium place after finishing joint second in their Nations Cup at the Sportridingclub Lamprechtshausen in Austria. Hannah and her team will be looking to go one better and secure the top-step of the podium following solid performances that saw Team GB share the spoils with The Netherlands after both sides finished on 8 penalties behind the Italian team who took the win with 4 penalties. Hannah took the role of anchor rider and she rode Cartouche II, a 15 year-old bay gelding owned by Ian Barker. Showing great maturity under pressure, Hannah belied her age and produced two superb clear rounds to ensure that she carried no penalties forward to the final result. She was one of only four riders to deliver a double clear. Last year was a remarkable year for the North Yorkshire youngster who claimed a Bronze medal as part of the Children on Horses Team in Belgium and secured the prestigious National U14 title at British Showjumping National Championships. Head of Forms 5 and 6 at Cundall Manor School, Louise Bessey said: “We are really proud of Hannah’s achievements to date. She is so committed to all her sport and this is a further opportunity for her to shine on the international stage.” “We will all be supporting her and we know that she will give it her all.” For further information on the show and full results once the show is underway, visit www.bishopburtonponyeuros2018.co.uk. New Entrance Area and Front Office Announced

We are very pleased to announce that we have been successful in our application for planning permission to build a new entrance area and Front Office in Upper School. This is the latest stage in the school’s exciting development. As you may be aware, the school has been working with George F. White and identified securing the site and introducing a new entrance area as the next stage of development as the school looks to upgrade its facilities and provide the best start for our children. We recently applied to Harrogate Borough Council in order to build a single storey extension to the Upper School, with the ability to accommodate a new point of contact for all visitors, parents, pupils and staff. This will ensure that we are in the best possible position to secure our site for future developments.
