Thank You from the Cundall Ball Committee

We are all taught from an early age that saying thank you is important, and following a significant donation from the Cundall Ball Committee, pupils, staff and the Cundall Ball committee are all joining together to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported The Cundall Manor Summer Ball 2018. A significant donation with money raised from this year’s Cundall Ball has been used to help finance IT development across the curriculum with new interactive whiteboards and chromebooks being added to the growing IT infrastructure. The Cundall Ball committee members were on hand earlier this week to see the impact new IT equipment is having on the learning experiences at the local school. Chair of the Cundall Ball committee, Rachel Powell said: “We would all like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the Cundall Ball last year.” “It is a great team effort and huge recognition must go to the generosity of our wonderful sponsors who donate the most fantastic prizes year after year along with the kindness of our parents and guests who come along and support the evening.” “The money you all raised will have a direct impact on the learning experiences of all the pupils at Cundall Manor and it is great to see them already reaping the rewards.” “ICT skills will only play a larger part in the development of the economies of the future and to witness the development of the school’s use of new technologies is a great benefit to all.” The ongoing development of the school’s IT infrastructure comes hot-on-the-heels of a further investment to secure super-fast broadband for the rural school. Pupils Undergo CPR Training as Part of Restart a Heart Day

Pupils Undergo CPR Training as Part of Restart a Heart Day Pupils from across the school are today learning the importance of CPR as part of a Europe wide initiative. Cundall joined another 115 schools from across the county to take part in ‘Restart a Heart Day’ – a programme which provides pupils with life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. Pupils as young as five joined in the training which aims to teach members of the public how to help restart the heart of someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest. Instructors from The Yorkshire Ambulance Service taught nearly 340 children at the school how to perform CPR using an interactive DVD and practical instruction on inflatable manikins. Stuart Jackson, helped organise the event for the school. He said: “Events like this help raise awareness and equip our pupils with a real-life skill that could prevent someone dying.” The school benefited from the expertise of several staff from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service being on hand to help instruct pupils as to the best way to perform the life-saving skill. Across Europe around 350,000 people a year suffer a cardiac arrest outside of a medical environment, often in the home. Bystander CPR by non-medical persons increases survival by two to three times, however, today it is delivered in only one in five out-of-hospital Cardiac Arrest cases. Estimates suggest that by increasing this rate we may save 100,000 lives in Europe per year. CPR consists of 4 key steps: Call for help Check for signs of life Perform mouth-to-mouth Perform chest compressions To find out more about Restart a Heart Day visit the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust dedicated website onwww.restartaheart.yas.nhs.uk/day/The Resuscitation Council (UK) have produced an app to help people on the go learn CPR. You can download it from your app store.

Ceramics Masterclass

Ceramics Masterclass Cundall welcomed a leading artist to hold a uniquely rural masterclass in ceramic art. We were delighted to welcome ceramic artist Jill Ford to the school to showcase a ceramics masterclass based on Highland cattle. Head of Art, Sarah Pearson, said: “It was wonderful to welcome Jill to Cundall. Our older pupils have previously visited her workshop and seen her in action, so it was a wonderful opportunity for the rest of our pupils to benefit from Jill’s expertise.” East Yorkshire based Jill, recently had her artwork on display at the Hepworth and has featured in a number of high profile ceramic exhibitions throughout the country. Sarah added: “We have a lot of rural families at our school and the children loved attempting to replicate the Highland cattle’s famous coat in clay.” “Thank you to Jill for coming into school and for hosting such a wonderful day of activities for our pupils.” The artwork will now be fired in the school’s kiln before the finishing touches are added.

Pupils to write a new chapter in the school’s green future

Pupils to write a new chapter in the school’s green future Pupils have decided to write a new chapter in the school’s future by ensuring that all plastic and metal waste office supplies are now recycled. The green-minded pupils are on a mission to turn Cundall green and ensure that all waste office plastics and metals are able to be recycled. The Zero Waste scheme is run in conjunction with TerraCycle and allows a host of items to be recycled and turned into other plastic and metal products. Form 5 pupils will take the lead on this project with the hope that no office waste makes it to landfill by the end of term. The programme allows small plastic or metal discarded office supplies such as pens, highlighters, pencil sharpeners, staplers, hole punchers, plastic folders, and file pockets amongst other things, to be recycled. Miss Bradshaw will be overseeing the Form 5 pupil’s efforts. She said: “With nearly 400 pupils using a variety of plastic and metal products daily, this one change could have a major impact.” She added: “The Zero Waste Programme is a wonderful way we can make a positive difference to our environment.” “How plastic is recycled is becoming more high profile across the world and hopefully we can do our bit and encourage every one of our pupils and their parents to think about what they do with plastic when they no longer need it.” TerraCycle are committed to ensuring no product they collect is incinerated or put to landfill. The company uses circular methods (reuse, upcycling or recycling) for repurposing the waste.

A Test of Endurance

Several lengths of the pool, a speedy ride around the grounds, and a dash towards the finishing line is all in a day’s work for Cundall Manor pupils. For over 200 pupils from the North Yorkshire school, the second annual Cundall Manor Triathlon proved a gruelling test of stamina, endurance and commitment. The pupils aged between seven and 13, took on the challenge laid down by the school’s sports department on a warm September afternoon. Head of Girl’s Games, Mrs Bessey, said many pupils had previously excelled in the individual pursuits but until last year never had the opportunity to combine the sports together. She said: “Each discipline within the Triathlon is a unique challenge. Our pupils had the chance to test themselves in each area and compete against each other in the pool, on their bikes and on foot.” She added: “Everyone certainly enjoyed the day. We are already a very active school and this was a superb opportunity for some of our younger pupils to try their hand at a new discipline, something which they did in typical Cundall fashion.” “Since our first triathlon event last year, some of our pupils have taken to competing in triathlons outside of school, which is a clear indicator of the event’s success.” The event was first inspired by Yorkshire’s own Brownlee brothers and youngsters from the sporty school embraced the daunting course in front of an appreciative crowd of parents, pupils and staff.
